Apologies for another letter but we felt it was important to keep you informed of what is happening at school.
Following yesterday’s announcement regarding the closure of schools to all pupils with the exception of ‘vulnerable’ children or those of key workers, we have been working hard with other schools in Education South West, across Devon and the country to put in place practical arrangements.
From Monday 23rd March, Teign School will be closed except for certain categories of children:
• Vulnerable children (those with an Education, Health and Care Plan; those with a social worker)
If your child is in this category then we need to know whether or not you are intending to send your child to school. Please expect a phone call from us to discuss your individual requirements. We will agree with you the days that your child will attend. If you wish to change this arrangement then please give us 24 hours notice. If your child is unable to attend then please let us know so we are assured your child is safeguarded.
• Children of key workers (such as health, police, social care, delivery drivers)
It is not yet clear which workers fit this definition. The government are due to announce this later today or tomorrow. As soon as we have this information we will circulate to you a document for completion to indicate your roles and whether you are able to send your child to school under this arrangement. Using this document we will know which days to expect your child. If your child is unable to attend then please let us know so we are assured your child is safeguarded. If you wish to change this arrangement then please give us 24 hours notice.
Those children who are in the vulnerable category or children of key workers that attend school next week will need to bring a packed lunch to school as there will be no catering facilities on site.
Education South West have organised meal vouchers for children in receipt of free school meals. These will be posted to your house or hand delivered to your child tomorrow. All teachers will set appropriate work for their classes, communicate this to students and parents, set deadlines for completion and make arrangements for marking and feedback of that work where appropriate.
Work will be set for all year groups from the day of school closure via ePraise.
After this, staff will continue to set work on ePraise, and may include the use of Skype, OneNote/Class Notebook, Microsoft Teams and other online systems such as Seneca or Sparx. The aim is to continue as much contact between students and teachers as possible, to keep them learning and supported.
It may be possible for staff to include some ‘live teaching’ via Skype, and the intention is for your subject teachers to be available to you during your timetabled lesson times, either through Skype or email. Teachers will communicate with you about this via ePraise.
We will, however, need to be flexible about these plans, as staff may be caring for their own children or other dependents at home, and/or may become poorly themselves for a time. We will all be doing our absolute all to keep giving you the best education that we can throughout.
Therefore, although the school is physically closed for the majority we wish to assure you that the staff will continue to work hard to provide the best education for our children.
We are continuing to support our year 11 and 13 as we await further information regarding their qualifications. Our plans to celebrate the end of year may require changing and adapting in due course. As we have students within these year groups currently self-isolating we do not think it appropriate to mark the occasion tomorrow as we wish to include the whole of the cohort for a celebration of their time at Teign School. Please can I remind parents that if a child is off school because they are self- isolating and been given a ‘Y’ attendance code then this should be enforced for the complete 14 days. Please do not send your child to school.
As we await further clarification, I wanted to reassure you that we will make sure that we formulate plans that are in the best interests of our students, staff and communities. We will update you on progress again tomorrow.
With best wishes
